CHA is now part of 'KOIN6' and 'Weatherbug.'

We are now the official Lake Oswego weather station for 'Koin 6' and 'Weatherbug.' Weatherbug approached us to see if our school would be interested in becoming a weather station. For anyone who knows Papa John, the next thing to weather watching is sports. He was so thrilled that our location fit the dynamics needed to install weather equipment. So, we now have a top-of-the-line weather station with roof mounted rain gauge, wind velocity and direction, temperate gauge, humidity, dew point, and barometer gauges all displayed in the office on a digitally displayed 'black box.' We have now arrived! This data will be used by the National Weather Service and KOIN6. We are so excited and honored; we get to use the fancy equipment and receive free advertising.

Please stop by the office and ask Papa John to show you this high tech weather station. Just make sure you have time; weather watching is his passion and you will leave knowing a bit more than you really cared to know about weather. This all must come along with his mid-west background. Tornadoes, electrical storms, hurricanes, you name the weather condition,John will fill you in on all the details. By the way, if you go to http://www.aws.com/flashdisplay.asp?id=LKOSW you will find the "Weatherbug" desktop application and free download. Soon our location will be updating with the school's name. Darn that John, I told him he's too old to play with tornadoes. There he goes again, chasing dust-devils. "You look both ways before crossing the street and stay off the freeway." He'll come hobbling back saying he nearly caught a big one. Those 'big ones' always seem to get away...such is life at 60. I told him if he doesn't behave, he can't play with Bruce Sussman. Keep tuned for our latest weather updates.

Ms. Patty's Birthday Card

We took a birthday card to Ms. Patty to help her celebrate! We worked very hard, tracing our names, drawing her pictures and telling Ms. Krista what we would want to buy her. We even sung her Happy Birthday. We hope she has a great day!!!

A letter about my upcoming maternity leave

Feb. 2, 2009

Dear Parents,

I have decided to begin my maternity leave on Mar. 1st. As some of you may have heard, I have been given 30 days notice on my apartment (they are remodeling) and must be out by the 28th of February. I am also going to move Emma to the school by the apartments that we are moving into because I just don’t think I can do the commute over here every day with a newborn. With these two things and of course needing to get ready for Elijah, I think this is a good time for me to begin my maternity leave. It will (hopefully) enable me to get our apartment set up and Emma situated in the school before having the baby. My plan is to come back to school around the time we transition the children to new classes and teachers in June. Classes and teachers haven’t been decided yet, but I am sure that planning will begin soon. The kids in here will either go to transitional kindergarten (for part time students or those who aren’t quite ready for the rigorous program of Pre-K) or preparatory kindergarten. I do not know who will teach what or what I’ll be teaching as of yet.

I have to admit, I am very sad to turn them over to someone else, but I know that they will have a great time and learn so much with Jessy. I do consider each one of them “my babies” and will always treasure the time we’ve spent together. They have all grown in so many ways and I’ve enjoyed being a part of each of their lives. I have enjoyed becoming friends with all of you and will miss all of you dearly. I will definitely be around during my maternity leave, bringing Emma by to see her friends, participating in CHA activities and showing off Elijah J (of course!) You are always welcome to email me at home (benemma1802@gmail.com) and many of you I see on Facebook as well. I will be checking in with Jessy a lot to see how the kids are doing and I’ll probably email you guys as well, just to check on them.

As long as Elijah decides to stay put, my last day will be Feb. 27th. I’d love to have a farewell party with all of you and the kids so we can all say goodbye, so keep around 3:15 on that Friday open if you can. Hopefully we can work out the details soon! Again, I thank you with all my heart for all your trust, support and understanding. I will miss you and your children very much! Take care and I promise the kids will do great! Jessy is a lot of fun and brings in lots of enthusiasm and experience with them.

Love,
Krista

Meet Dudley

Meet Dudley, our Autism Service Dog. Dudley was placed with Ms. Patty for a year to 'puppy raise.' Dudley came to us on January 31st. Dudley immediately bonded with me and our home. Chewie, on the other hand, was a bit more resistant to the idea of sharing 'mom' with this 'mini horse' as John calls him. Dudley took to Chewie and attempted to playfully engage him several times. Chewie returned the offer with a look that could have said, "not in this lifetime, buddy!" Chewie is slowly warming up to Dudley; he also lets Dudley know in typical alpha fashion, "this is my turf and I'm the boss!"

Dudley is a standard Poodle that has 'hair' not 'fur.' This feature alone is helpful for children with animal dandler allergens. Both Chewie and Dudley are considered 'hypoallergenic' animals. Dudley is nearly a year old. Over the next year, we will socialize Dudley to various situations that he must be accustomed to when he is eventually placed with a child. For those who have limited information about Autism Service Dogs, I would encourage you to visit this site: info@autismservicedogsofamerica.com

Here is some information that I researched on Standard Poodles before accepting Dudley: "The Standard Poodle is proud, elegant, dignified and good-natured. These dogs are highly intelligent and one of the most trainable breeds. They are pleasant, happy and sensitive. The Standard Poodle tends to be a bit calmer than the smaller variety of Poodles, but will become high strung if you do not give them the proper amount and type of exercise. They need to be with people and dislike being alone. They are generally friendly toward strangers, and are excellent with children. The Standard Poodle is good with other dogs. Some Standards are good guard dogs and some can be trained as hunters. Make sure you are this dog's firm, consistent, confident pack leader, providing daily pack walks to avoid separation anxiety and other unwanted behavior issues."

Dudley will work for a few hours a day in the classrooms. His job is to remain in a down position for approximately 30 minutes while the children work. Upon the teacher's command, Dudley will interact with the children. We are slowly working up the length of time he will remain in classrooms. He will eventually have to be accustomed to staying in a classroom for several hours as a companion. Dudley is a wonderful acquisition to the school and the setting is perfect for his eventual placement. Please feel free to see me if you have any questions about Dudley.
